Som is considered one of the largest fish living in our waters. Fishing for it requires a special skill, because this representative of the aquatic fauna is not only cunning, but also very strong. Not every angler can get a decent copy out of the water. However, there is one ancient fishing structure, invented by our great-grandfathers, which allows you to hunt catfish without requiring any special tricks or power from the fisherman. It is called Seine, or somovnik. This catfish tackle has an unusually simple structure, and its efficiency is much higher than other catfish gear. About somovnikom and will be discussed in this article.

What is a seine

Seine fishing used in the days of Kievan Rus. They were used to catch both "peaceful fish" and predatory. The tackle itself is a long rope on which the leashes with hooks are attached. The rope is stretched at a certain part of the reservoir and is fixed on pins driven into the bottom or on a kind of anchor, which is most often used for large stones. Naturally, to install this gear requires a boat.

Seine on catfish

Fishing for seine does not require control by the angler, or even his presence. It is enough to stretch the tackle from the evening, fasten it, plant the bait, and in the morning you can come for the catch. Agree, quite comfortable tackle for our fishermen. And no matter how big and strong the catfish is, if the seine is made securely, by the morning the fish will not have enough strength even to greet you with tail strokes in the water.

What is tackle

Now let's take a closer look at the somnik construction. Tackle seine on som consists of:

  • length of the rope (long, strong rope), which is the basis of tackle;
  • leads, the number of which depends on the length of the long;
  • hooks;
  • ogruzki (one or more lead cargo);
  • floats.

Dlinnik can be made of any strong cord or rope with a diameter of 3 to 6 mm. Often for these purposes use ordinary clothesline.

Peremat on catfish can have any number of leads. Their number depends on the length of the base (long). The length of the leads is usually 0.5-0.7 m, depending on the fishing conditions. They fit at a distance of 1-1.5 m from each other.

As for the hooks, then their choice should be approached, focusing on the type and size of the bait. Most often these are forged products of size No. 6-12 according to the domestic classification with an elongated forearm.

Considering that seine is a bottom tackle on a catfish, it must be shipped. To do this, use lead loads. The weight of the load should correspond to the intensity of the flow. In other words, the gear should remain in place.

Floats are needed for the most part as a guide so that the angler will not search for a place for a long time, where he installed a seine. But they are often used to lift tackle above the bottom, especially in places where it is covered with stones or driftwood.

How to make a seine with your own hands

Now let's figure out how to make a som. By the way, today fishing can be bought not only in the market, but also in any specialty store. But does it make sense to buy something, if it can be done by hand with a penny cost?

Let's start with dlinnik. As already mentioned, a strong cord or rope can make it. As for the length, it will be better to install the catfish on small reservoirs, securing its ends on the opposite banks. If you have to fish in the reservoir, determine the required length based on the fishing conditions.

Leads are made of braided fishing line with a minimum thickness of 0.5 mm. They can be tied in advance to the rope at a distance of 1-1.5 m from each other, or they can be done directly on the pond after securing the dlinnik.

But that's not all, as making a seine is only half the battle. In addition, you will need to make a device on which the somovnik will be wound, because it is not very convenient to transport the rope with leads and hooks attached to it.

Most often, the seine is wound on a reel cut from a board, dense foam, or bent out of wire. You can also wind the somovnik on a piece of plastic or cardboard tube. Hooks at the same time sheathed by pieces of foam.

It is necessary to load the tackle on the spot, having determined the course and depth of the reservoir. Floats are usually cut from a piece of foam and are attached to the spritz after it is installed.

That's basically it. As you can see, there is no difficulty in the manufacture and installation of seine. And it is better if there are several somovnikov in your arsenal. This will significantly increase the likelihood of returning home with your catch.

When they catch catfish on seine

Unlike other predators, catfish shows the highest activity in summer. Catching it on a seine can be started from the end of May, but the most active bite occurs in July. Starting from September, its activity will decline, and by the end of October the biting will stop.

The best time of day for fishing on a catfish is night. It was at night that he emerged from his “home” in search of food, rising from the depths closer to the surface. Late evening and early morning can also be catchy, especially after a thunderstorm rain. During these periods, the catfish has a great appetite.

Where to catch catfish on seine

Seine on catfish do not put in its habitat. This is due to the fact that this fish lives in the deepest parts of the reservoir, and often also covered up. Tackle is installed near the intended placement of catfish dwellings, as well as places where the predator feeds.

These can be coastal areas of a backwater reservoir, shallow backwaters rich in frogs, bottom rifts with abundant vegetation, ridges of holes, etc.

The best catfish bait

As bait on the septum when catching catfish use:

  • large worm (crawl);
  • live bait;
  • pieces of fish;
  • frogs;
  • small birds with pre-seared plumage;
  • bird and fish offal;
  • meat of river mussels;
  • large leeches;
  • medvedka and others

Chunks of rotten meat or tentacle crayfish can also be good baits. It is desirable to catch a catfish on a seine, using more than one type of attachments, but several, that is, so that different lures are placed alternately on the same gear.

How to put Seine on catfish

Installation options seine set. On a small river, tackle is set, securing the ends of the lengthy man on the opposite banks, enclosing it in the middle and slightly raising the floats on the sides. This option will allow you to "block" the site at different depths. It is also possible not to lower the septum to a greater depth, but to leave it in the middle of the water or near its surface. This option is used for catching a frog. The bait is set on the thigh and, floating on the surface of the water, creates bursts, attracting by this a predator.

On large reservoirs, seine can be placed along a steep bank or in shaded shallow areas, securing it with hammered stakes.

To adjust the desired depth, foam floats are used, which are attached at a certain distance to the spike. They lift the gear and hold it in the desired position. The load is also mounted to the longitudinal one, but lastly, when the tackle is already adjusted in depth.

Check the availability of the catch

If the gear has been installed since the evening, it is better to check it after sunrise. The fisherman floats up on a boat to the site, and, focusing on the floats, he lifts a longitudinal mirror. If the fish is on the hook, she goes to the boat to the fisherman. By the way, to blow a catfish out of the water, it is desirable to have a special pointed hook on you. With it, fish cling to the lip, and hold up until it is in a boat or landing. Bagorik is designed to save your catch.

If the fish on the hooks of the seine was not found, it is necessary to check the attachments, update them and, if desired, continue fishing. In the event that there is no such desire, the tackle is dismantled, having previously untied it from one side, reeling on the reel.

A few tips on catching catfish

So we figured out how to catch catfish on the seine. Finally, here are some useful tips that will help you make fishing as successful as possible.

  1. When making seine with your own hands, try to find a solid cord or rope for a longitudinal cable. The basis of the tackle, connected from the pieces, will contribute to the entanglement of the structure.
  2. Choosing hooks for catfish, give preference to forged models, perhaps even homemade ones.
  3. Before each fishing trip, check the condition of the hooks and, if necessary, remove rust from them, as well as sharpen them with a fine file or sandpaper.
  4. Store and transport seine only with covered hooks.
  5. It is much more convenient to put a boat from a boat together: one is engaged in tackle, the other controls the boat.
  6. When installing a catfish on a fast-flowing river, do not load it in such a way that the leashes are on the bottom, especially if it is stony or overcrowded.
  7. Do not place the seine on deep, clogged areas, as well as in places where there are fallen trees. Caught on the hook catfish will try to entangle in the snags and tear off the snap.
  8. Always use several peremetov, installing them in different areas.
  9. Use several types of nozzles on one seine. Food preferences of catfish can vary several times a day.
  10. Do not worry if you failed to catch the captured catfish from the first time. Next time, be sure to get lucky!
