Blood test for RW – it is a screening (tentative) diagnosis of syphilis. These laboratory studies to date is the most common, informative and simple.
Blood on RW – what is it?
The acronym stands for: R – reaction, W Wasserman. It's safe to say that every adult, without even knowing about the existence of this technique at least once in your life passed that test.
Blood on RW is required for a range of citizens:
- people for registration in a health care setting (clinic or during hospitalization)
- drug addicts
- people in direct contact with patients with syphilis
- health workers
- employees having contact with food, especially involved in their preparation
- long febrile patients (over 1 month).
Why do so many people in need of periodic conduct of this study? The reason lies in the insidious of the disease and its specificity. In some cases people do not even suspect to be infected, and having no long time, no signs of the disease, can infect a large number of others.
The essence Wasserman
This laboratory reaction involves the detection of antibodies to causative agent of syphilis – pale Treponema. The fact that when infection (often sexually transmitted or contact-household) triggers the human immune system, and in response to the penetration of foreign biological agent into the blood large quantities of antibodies to fight it. During the laboratory diagnostics introduces a known antigen (cardiolipin), and if in a blood sample of a patient are formed by coupling the antigen-antibody, then it is infected.
It is very important to pay attention to any abnormalities in the health and consult a doctor. You also need to remember that a real opportunity not only to preserve their health, but also to ensure the health of their loved ones – to donate blood on RW. What is it and what are the rules of blood donation, which we will consider next.
Rules blood on RW
The analysis is performed on the venous blood. You only need 10 ml for diagnosis. Blood on RW you need to pass strictly on an empty stomach, moreover, at least 12 hours prior to study to exclude the use of strong tea and coffee, and to stop taking drugs and alcohol. It is advisable not to smoke.
How much is a blood on RW, depends on the workload of the laboratory in which you handed over the analysis, but the average is 1-2 days. In emergency cases, rapid diagnosis or carrying on cito – immediately and quickly.
Transcript analysis data
So, we figured out the main issue: the blood on RW – what is it and how is. Now is to elaborate on the data that the patient sees in the form of analysis.
The result can be negative, positive, doubtful or weakly positive.
Negative terminal indicated by a minus sign "-". If the blood test came back negative, that, unfortunately, does not exclude the presence of syphilis. It may be so in the primary and the tertiary period of the disease and excessive haemolysis. It should be remembered that when infected in the first 2.5 weeks, the result would most likely be negative, and a quarter of patients can be so even after 6 weeks from the onset of the disease.
A positive result has a plus sign " ", which in the end may be a few, and their number indicates the degree of probability of an illness:
- "" – the reaction dubious
- "" – the reaction is weakly positive
- "" – the reaction is positive
- "++++" - the reaction is sharply positive.
In some cases, may occur false-positive results because a blood on RW, HIV infection is not always confirmed, but may be determined in other diseases (tuberculosis, pneumonia, cancer, viral hepatitis, diabetes and even pregnancy when the woman is not infected with this disease).
If the result with one or two pros, the analysis should be re-commissioned.
Remember, very important the correct interpretation of the results on RW-blood. Decoding must be carried out exclusively by a specialist! Only a doctor will be able to competently compare the complaints, anamnesis, clinical picture, objective data, laboratory results and to make the right conclusion.
To confirm or remove the diagnosis of "syphilis" can be used additional methods of laboratory diagnosis: immunofluorescence and reaction of immobilization pale treponemes.
RIF (immunofluorescence reaction) involves the detection of treponemes by adding to human serum. The pathogen isolated from infected syphilis of the rabbit, and if the blending of these two environments into a fluorescent microscope, there is a glow – diagnosis confirmed. If glow is not, then, and in the human pathogen no. This method is much more sensitive than the Wassermann reaction, and can be used at the earliest stages of the disease.
RIBT (reaction immobilization pale treponemes) is a highly specific test to identify a false positive result and to differentiate a healthy person from the patient.
Blood analysis for RW is assigned when:
- planning pregnancy (at least three times during its course)
- unmotivated weakness and pain in the bones
- casual sexual intercourse (especially unprotected)
- abundant secretions and ulcerations on the genitals
- rashes on mucous membranes and skin
- swollen lymph nodes, especially in the presence of at least one of the above symptoms
- prophylactic examinations
- before surgery.
Remember, by donating blood on RW, that's not a sentence, but only the ability to identify the enemy, and time to start fighting it. Be alert and healthy!
