How was the university created?

The beginning of such an institution as Grodno State University. Yankee Kupala, was laid with the approval of the region of Soviet power. Recall that the territories of Western Belarus in the interwar period belonged to the Polish state and there was no question of the development of independent education for the Eastern Slavs. But in 1939, these lands came under the leadership of the USSR, and almost immediately the new government began to correct this problem. So, in 1940, the Grodno Teaching Institute was opened, which in the future will turn into the Grodno State University. Yankee Kupala.

Grodno State University

Short life of a teacher’s institute

Initially, the university had three departments, the Belarusian language and literature, the Russian language and literature, and the department of technical sciences. The main objective of this institution was to train teachers for the newly created secondary schools with Belarusian and Russian languages of instruction. But the teacher’s institute did not have to function for a long time. With the occupation in 1941, the school was closed, as, indeed, most schools for the local population.

Grodno Pedagogical Institute - the predecessor of the Grodno State University

After the liberation of Western Belarus, its full-fledged recovery could not have happened without the restoration of higher education in the region. Therefore, in 1944, the Grodno Teachers' Institute was revived, only under the name Grodno Pedagogical Institute. In parallel with some reorganization, the old structure of the educational institution remained: the newly established institute had three faculties, including physical and mathematical, literary and foreign languages. At the same time, the first departments for correspondence education are opened.

Another significant stage in the history of the university was the mid-50s. It is marked both by the general reorganization of the institute and by the active struggle of the teaching staff for the rights of the Belarusian language. It was at this time that the future Grodno State University of Yanka Kupala (GrSU) was named in honor of the great Belarusian poet of the pre-war period. During the reorganization, a number of new faculties were opened, which still exist today.

In 1978, the pedagogical institute became the GrSU, as we know it today. Grodno State University. Yanki Kupala became the first institution of higher education in the history of Western Belarus, and its discovery greatly influenced the further cultural and scientific development of the region.
