Sounds of speech play an important role in the life of each person & ndash; thanks to them all people can talk and understand what they say each other.
All speech sounds are of two types - consonants and vowels. And although the number of the latter is much larger, at many moments the vowels are decisive. So, for example, the number of syllables depends on the number of vowels in a word, in addition, it is vowel sounds that have the property of shock / shocklessness. When considering the question of vowels, it is also worthwhile to note that their number does not correspond to the number of denoting letters. How many vowel sounds in the Russian language, and why it happens - is yet to be understood.

Vowels: how many vowel sounds in the Russian language and their classification

What sounds are called vocals

First of all, it is worth remembering what sounds are called vowels. Vowels (from the Latin word vocales) are phonetic sounds, formed with the help of a voice, without any noise. By pronouncing a vowel, a person exhales air freely and it easily passes through the larynx, then through the mouth and between the ligaments, without encountering any obstacles. Due to their acoustic characteristics, in particular, the fact that the length of the vowel sound can be any, they are also called musical, or tone.

How many vowel sounds in Russian

With a dozen letters, only six sounds correspond to them - these sounds [s], [e], [o], [y], [a], [and].Some of the above vowels are graphically denoted by different letters. For example, [a] can give not only "a & raquo ;, but also the letter" I & raquo; in a certain position, and sometimes the unstressed "about & raquo ;:" Valentina & raquo ;, "the ball & raquo ;," the board & raquo ;.

The sound [y] can give not only the letter "y & raquo ;, but sometimes" u & raquo ;: "sledgehammer & raquo ;, hatch & raquo ;.

The sound [о] except the letter "о & raquo ;, gives" e & raquo ;: "cake & raquo ;," dog & raquo ;.

The vowel [s] gives the letter "u & raquo; as well as the percussion" and "if" it is in the position after the letters "w", "w", "w & raquo ;:" fang & raquo ;, "circus & raquo ;. The letterless letters "e & raquo ;," a & raquo ;, "about & raquo; sometimes too can designate this sound: "tested & raquo ;," horses & raquo ;, "chocolate & raquo ;.

Vowel [e] can give the letters "e & raquo; and "e & raquo ;:" Mary & raquo ;, "Forester & raquo ;.

But the vowel [and] is graphically indicated by only one "and", if it is in a shock position: "peaceful & raquo ;. Without emphasis, this vowel can be given the letters "a & raquo; ("Watchmaker & raquo;)," I & raquo; ("Ranks"), "e & raquo; ("Adjacent & raquo;) standing after soft consonants. Also "and", following the soft consonant or the beginning of the word ("player & raquo;); "E & raquo; at the beginning of the word ("bookcase & raquo;).

Thus, considering the question of how many Russian vowels sounds, it becomes clear why there are fewer than the letters themselves.

Letters of vowels

Each vowel sound has its own graphic designation in the form of a letter. In our language, a dozen signs to indicate vowel sounds. These are the letters "about & raquo ;," y & raquo ;, "e & raquo ;," a & raquo ;, "i & raquo ;," and & raquo ;, "u & raquo ;," e & raquo ;, "e & raquo ;," u & raquo ;.At the same time, the vowel sounds themselves are almost half as large as & ndash; six. This situation is due to the fact that the iotated "u & raquo ;," e & raquo ;, "i & raquo ;," i & raquo; - not individual sounds. Depending on their position in the word, these letters are able to designate different sounds.

At the beginning of the word, following the vowels or the "á & raquo; and "i & raquo; iotirovannye letters denote the sound combination of two sounds (are diphthongs): [j] and the corresponding vocales: "Jana", "wash", "curly & raquo ;.

In cases where "I & raquo ;," e & raquo ;, "e & raquo ;," I & raquo; follow the consonant letters, they denote the corresponding vowel sound, and also make the preceding consonant soft: "accepted & raquo ;.

Having dealt with the question of how many vowel sounds in the alphabet, and how many letters, it becomes clear why there was a significant difference.

Classification of vowels. Labialization

Having paid enough attention to two questions: how many vowel sounds in the Russian language, and whether many signs are used to convey them on the letter, it is necessary to pass to the classification. Vowel sounds, as well as their brethren, consonants, have a number of characteristics, according to which they are referred to different groups.

There are several of them: it is labialization (nuisance), the way of formation (lifting) and the place of formation (row).

Labialization or, in other words, insulting & ndash; this is a sign of participation or non-participation of elongated lips in the process of pronunciation of sound. How many vowel sounds in the language would not be available (in Russian, like most other languages, there are six), only two of them [o] and [y] are labialized. Others do not have this property.

An interesting fact: the greater the use in one or another language of frayed sounds, the more melodic the speech sounds. Therefore, one of the most melodic languages of the world is French, because it often uses the sounds [o] and [y].

Method of formation of vowels

The classification of vowels by the method of education is also called the classification of the vertical rise of the language. In our language, the vocales are divided into:
1) Lower lift & ndash; sound [a].
2) Average rise & ndash; [o] and [e].
3) Upper lift & ndash; the highest position of the language, characteristic for the pronunciation of the sounds [y], [u], [s].

Place of formation of vowels

Classification of vowels in the place of education (series), divides vowel sounds into the horizontal position of the tongue while pronouncing a certain sound. All vowel sounds in the place of education are divided into:
1) Rear row & ndash; sounds [y], [o], with their formation, the language is maximally pushed back.
2) Average range & ndash; sounds [a], [s]. When they are pronounced, the language is moved back not so far and is in the so-called middle position.
3) Front row & ndash; sounds [e], [and]. By forming them, the language is maximally advanced.

Classify and remember the distinctive properties of vowels sounds much easier than consonants, since there are much fewer. However, for every educated person who wants to write and talk correctly, it is important to accurately represent how many vowels the Russian language sounds, with what graphic signs they are recorded. This knowledge can be useful to those who are going abroad and for this purpose begins to study another's language. In the related Slavic languages, the pronunciation of vowels is in many respects similar to that of Russians, since all of them in the distant past came from the same Slavonic language. In foreign languages from other language families, the principles of the formation of vowels, as well as their classification, take place according to the generally accepted rules of linguistics. So even when studying English or French, it is important for a person to have an idea of how many vowel sounds in the Russian language.
